eric_4-226x300Congratulations to Tampa Bay Times TV/media critic — and former TBABJ president — Eric Deggans! He’s been selected to receive the 2013 Legacy Award from the National Association of Black Journalists Arts and Entertainment Task Force.

Eric, author of Race-Baiter: How the Media Weilds Dangerous Words to Divide a Nation, will be honored at a reception during the NABJ convention in Kissimmee later this summer.

TBABJ now accepting entries for 2012 Griot Drum Awards

The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ) is now accepting entries for its 2012 Griot Drum Awards program. The program honors the best media coverage of people of color.

The contest is open to print, broadcast and online media professionals of all ethnicities. Journalists submitting entries do not have to be a member of TBABJ, a local chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).

Any individual or news organization in Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sarasota counties can enter materials published, broadcast or presented online between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011. There are 31 categories this year. The deadline to submit entries is September 10, 2012.

Award winners will be presented in the fall at TBABJ’s 2012 Griot Drum Awards & Scholarship Banquet.

And the 2011 Griot Drum finalists are…

Congratulations to the following broadcast, multimedia and print professionals whose coverage of people of color earned them spots as finalists in the 2011 Griot Drum Awards contest!

The Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ) will announce winners on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the headquarters of The Nielsen Company, 501 Brooker Creek Blvd., Oldsmar.

Tickets, which can be purchased at www.tbabj.com, are $35 for TBABJ members, $45 for non-members and $320 for a table.

You’ll get the chance to hobnob with the area’s media professionals at a pre-banquet reception, enjoy a full dinner and performances by local musicians Josh Cooperman and Jonathan Milton. CNN anchor Don Lemon will deliver the keynote address.

The master of ceremonies will be WFLA-Channel 8 morning anchor Rod Carter.
